Spa Lady opened for business in December 1980 in two modest Calgary locations. The North Calgary location had been an all-women's club called Lady Spa, while the south, also an all-women's club, had gone by the name Lady Fitness. Both clubs were floundering and only too happy to sell the whole works to Edward and Angela Forrest - a young Winnipeg couple come west to follow their dream of building a community of friends improving their health and having fun. Both original Calgary Spa Lady locations were 3,500 sq feet in total. The locker facilities, whirlpool room, group fitness and exercise bike areas, and the staff room and offices - the entire club - could have comfortably fit into the group fitness room at any Spa Lady today. Nonetheless, Spa Lady was born, and with it came a new standard of service and innovation for the Alberta fitness industry. Because there was no money for special amenities like strength training equipment in the early days, Spa Lady was built on the enthusiasm and creativity of the staff. Group fitness classes, bike drills and musical calesthenics kept the clubs bursting with activity from morning to night, and contributed to developing a tightly knit community of friends improving their health and having fun. Much has changed since the early 80's. Spa Lady's dedication to innovation in programming, and service, outfitting its clean and comfortable locations with the most modern equipment, and low membership pricing have made it one of the largest and most successful fitness organizations in Alberta. The tightly knit community of friends improving their health and having fun has grown and continues to grow as Spa Lady leads the industry forward, one success at a time.
